Major Chas S. Carrington
Richmond

I reached here yesterday and an opportunity presenting to forward this by Maj Bryan I have time only to say that there is not a wagon running on the route between this place {on the Greenville & Columbia RR} and Washington Ga {on the Georgia RR} the only connection between the South & SW and the armies in Va & NC.
I understood while in Richmond that the Qr Mr Genl had ordered a large wagon train on this route, yet at this date not one has appeared. Capt Venable has run his four wagons until the animals are exhausted. Unless a train is established at once to bring the supplies over how it is possible for the armies to be fed? The Engineers Dept have placed a pontoon bridge over the Savannah River upon my return to Chester will give you a detail report of the condition of the country means of transportation &c &c
Very Hurriedly
& Truly yrs
