Col., |
I am just in receipt of your dispatch of
the 31st ult. On the 30 ult. Maj. Taylor, of Savannah, informed me that
certain ordnance stores belonging to the Macon Arsenal, Armory &
Laboratory, in boxes marked with your name & that of Col. Cuyler & Col.
Mallet, respectively, would be sent me, "for safekeeping" & only
"temporarily." |
On the 6th & 8th ult. he sent me the
receipts of the Sav. R. R. {probably the
Charleston & Savannah RR} for 75 boxes machinery, marked B
{in a square} & 69 boxes machinery, 17
pieces machinery, 3 fares & 27 anvils, marked S
{in parenthesis}. No invoices ever came with them, & I know
nothing more of them. Maj. T. requested me to send a messenger to
Charleston to aid in getting them across to the Charleston cars
{the South Carolina RR}. Having none, I
telegraphed Maj. Chambliss to do so. His agent reported that the stores
had all been transferred to the Chas. train. Having no room for them, I
requested the Q. M. to store them in the most convenient place. They are
in a dry warehouse, immediately on the R. R. about 3 miles from the City
{probably at the Junction, south of the city},
from which they can readily be put into cars. The R. R. receipts, above
alluded to, contain all the information in my possession, about the
boxes. |
