| The duties performed by me are
of such a character as to as to entitle me to a Majors commission and
I would respectfully ask your recommendation for the same. |

I am serving the Government at a positive loss to myself
and at points where I have been much exposed to fatal diseases, but
upon these points I do not claim promotion, I claim it on the ground
of discharging my duties with zeal and fidelity, and with what judgment
and success you can learn from Major F. W. Sims A. Q. M. at Richmond
with whom I have been constantly associated.

| This officer was
recommended by me to be a Capt Commissary because in arranging
transportation for Commissary stores for many months as an agent he
served with great benefit to the service and much loss to himself and as
he received no appointment I wished to secure him. His services are so
important to transportation & Major Sims desiring him I fully commend
his appointment of Major knowing that no one of that grade can be more
useful & that his expenses even with allowances for mileage will
not be met by his pay as captain. |

| Respectfully referred
to Quarter Master General. Capt. Hottel has been with me for several
months and has exhibited a zeal and efficiency in the discharge of his
duties that entitle him to promotion. His duties have been very heavy,
exposing him to sickness and danger but have always been performed
with alacrity. He is now at Montgomery engaged in moving rail road
stock from west of Alabama river. His promotion is cheerfully
recommended; it would be easily bestowed and gratefully received. |
