Sir,
   The order revoking the detail of Sergt P. H. Burness is received.
   I regret that it seemed expedient to issue such an order, for we depend upon his services to aid us in putting the Road in order. For this service Mr Burness is known to be peculiarly fitted. We need the services of {words lost in fold} when can hardly be appreciated by any but those who are aware of the condition of the Central Road, and who know how useless, an inexperienced person in such matter is. We have recently lost one of our best men, by death, and cannot fill his place. I do not wish to continually urge upon the Government the condition of our Road. I take it for granted that my former communications have been credited & wish this belief on my part I can confidently ask if it is probable that the services of Mr Burness can be more needed as a soldier than in the service I wish him for & for which he has peculiar qualifications.
  I feel at liberty under the circumstances, & it is certainly {words lost in fold} reconsider the order revoking the detail of Sergt P. H. Burness. {Co. C 20th Battalion Va. Heavy Artillery}
Very Respectfully
