   In response to your "Inspection Circular" received this day, I have the honor of submitting appended report.
1st  Assigned to present duty by Maj George Whitfield QM Chief of Transportation & also Rail Roads west of the Alabama River to whom I was ordered to report Feb 26th 1864 by Maj R M Mason then Chief Q M for this Department. Last order is with my old Papers at Gainesville Ala but enclose copy of Maj Whitfields order
2nd  Nature of present status so far as understood am to inspect transportation issues, see that transportation is furnished when required & to proper extent by R Roads but principally to rebuild Roads as fast as they are destroyed by Enemies raids. I am also engaged in gathering up subsistence stores for Maj J J Beauchamp C S in his District in Alabama which duty I have a Wagon Master, Drivers & Teams.
3d  Ten Employees: Private S C Lewis Co "A" Armsteads Cavl Regt age 24 years. Pvt F G Mooring Co "B" 56th Ala Regt. Pvt J C Walton Co "A" 1st Miss Regt & Seven Slaves -- Alfred, Ishans, Uathan, Nash, Elick, Vincent & Norris -- the latter Boy belongs to Chat Roberts the former to Chas McLaran. Two Details & Slaves are absent & therefore ages cannot be given but simply state that they are young. I enclose copy of Pct Lewises Detail, Pvt Mooring was sent up the road on business with orders to return via Lauderdale springs for examination by Medical Board on 23d inst & has his papers with him. Pvt Walton has his paper with train in Ala for protection against Conscript officers while engaged with Maj Beauchamps transportation. Present rate of pay for Details $2 pr Day & allowances pay of slaves $30.00 pr mo as pr Alabama Schedule
4th 5th & 6th  No Contracts. No Purchases except occasionally of forage at schedule prices & Business attended to at all hours.
7th No Forage issued at present except for Wagon Masters Horse when engaged on Rail Road tracks issue one Forage ration to my own & to such employees as it may be necessary to mount. I enclose copies of orders & Detail.
