Office of Chief Qrmaster
Special Department
Grenada 12 June 1862

Capt. R. M. Hove
A. A. Genl.

Sir,
I have the honor to report for the information of the General Commanding That:
After having visited the different Stations on the Mobile & Ohio Rail Road as far South as "Meridian" Grenada on the Miss. Central, Canton by communication (the General himself having visited that and Jackson) and Memphis Tenn. I find my Department to be in good condition, the Officers active, Energetic and prompt in the discharge of their duties; I would here state that at Oxford & Holly Springs, the quarter Masters were absent consequently, I was unable to confer with them.
I would further beg care to remark that the Department under the charge of Capt Le Baron at Fort Pillow, and that at Memphis under Major W. J. Anderson deserves much credit for the Energy and promptness displayed in saving Government property, consequent upon the Evacuation of their respective Stations.
Very Respectfully
Your Obdt Servant
George Whitfield
Chief QrMaster
