Capt.,
I have had the honor to receive your note of this date relative to the connection in Petersburg between the Richmond Weldon roads {Richmond & Petersburg RR to the Petersburg RR}, and requesting the views of General Lee in the matter. It has been reported to him that the present connection is utterly useless, it being impracticable and dangerous for even an engine to travel over it. He knows nothing of your plan, which you propose carrying out under the instruction of the Q. M. Genl but directs me to say that when reconstructed, it should be done in such a manner as will allow trains to pass from one road to the other. Otherwise it will be useless. The ground to be traversed may be of such a character as to limit the curves to such a degree as to forbid the passage of a large or whole train, but at least to be of any use, it should be practicable to run the trains over in detached portions.
I am very respectfully
Your obt Sevt
