Sir,
At the request of Col. Gentry, I have the honor to submit the following report

Houston 26th Nov 1862

Gen J. Y. Dashiell
Adj & Insp Gen
Austin

Sir,
Having been requested by Col. Gentry to examine the country in the immediate vicinity of Beaumont, with a view to the selection of a location for a camp for five hundred troops, and so report the result to you. I have in compliance, the honor to inform you that the necessary examinations have been made, and from the information in my possession I am induced to recommend a site below Travis Point on Herings land 3/4 of a mile from the Texas & N. O. R. R. Depot {Texas & New Orleans RR} at Beaumont.
This location combines dryness of soil a convenience and abundant supply of fuel, with two or more ponds of water for washing &c, while wells of fifteen feet depth, will furnish an abundant supply of good drinking water. It is about equidistant between the river ??? and approached by good roads from both and is completely sheltered from "Northers" by a dense growth of oak timber.
Respectfly
Yours &c
