Quartermaster General's Department
Sept. 30th 1864

Lt. Col. J. S. Corley
Ch QMaster etc

Sir,
Capt. Robinson will hand you this note; & I desire you to confer with him as to the amount of freight that you can haul across the break from Stony Creek {a station on the Petersburg RR 21 miles from Petersburg} to Petersburg. It is all important that the freight coming from Wilmington should all continue on by that route; in order that we may not further "back up" Greensboro & Danville. If we are to keep any supplies in Richmond at all, & provide for the prompt movement of troops, we must endeavor to supply the troops around Petersburg with Q. M. & Commissary Stores from Stony Creek. The largest amount you can haul from Stony Creek Capt. Robinson will attempt to transport to that point. In some instances it may be necessary for you to haul through to Dunlaps in order that all freight from Wilmington should come that way; & thus save Greensboro & Danville. I attach great importance to this matter, & hope you will be able to accomplish what is desired. The other route is unequal to our demands.
Capt. Robinson will also confer with you as to the transfer of some rolling stock now shut up at Petersburg. It maybe necessary to consult Genl. Lee. But we should run no unnecessary risk of losing it.
Your letter in reference to forage etc has been referred to the proper officers & will be answered soon. I can see no necessity for sending an officer here merely to receive & store hay. It is all kept separate & reported to me daily. This may be necessary when you desire to issue this forage. I would rather diminish than increase the number of Q. Masters in Richmond.
A. R. Lawton, Q. M. Genl.
