Quartermaster General's Department
Sep. 17th 1864

Capt. H. M. Waller AQM
Danville

Sir,
I herewith enclose a telegram from yourself, presented to me this morning, which affords an example among many other, of the very unnecessary use of the telegraph by officers of this Dept.
Col. Sims of R. R. Bureau had just returned from Danville, & through him this Bureau was in full knowledge of the necessities of that Road, rendering it altogether unnecessary that you should telegraph to another officer in a different branch of the QM Dept. to "use his influence to send additional Engines." The attention of our officers has often been called to the too free use of the telegraph & warning given that the cost of such messages would be charged against them. You will therefore not permit this to remain a charge against this Dept.
A. R. Lawton, Q. M. G.
