Quartermaster General's Department
August 4th 1864

Maj. E. B. Branch
Petersburg, Va.

Major,
By order of the Q. M. General I this morning telegraphed to you to permit no corn to come here from Petersburg. This order is founded on the fact that it has been found to be necessary to send to Col. Corley corn from here, & it is of course wrong to bring corn on one train & carry it back on return trip. You will therefore take possession of any corn arriving in Petersburg destined for Richmond and give a receipt for the amount to be returned to the parties here. I enclose a memorandum showing corn received here & sent from here on {Richmond &} Petersburg R. R.
W. F. Alexander, Maj. & Asst. to Q. M. G.
