NA, QM 7/31/1863

Quartermaster General's Department
Richmond, July 31, 1863

Col. H. B. Davidson
Commanding Post
Staunton, Va.

Colonel,
Major Randolph in charge of the work connecting the Rivanna River Improvement with the {Virginia} Central Rail Road, is greatly in need of labor, and to supply it partially he has applied to have the "Chain Gang" at Staunton transferred to that work.
The Secretary of War approves of the application, if there be no reason why the convicts should not be removed from Staunton and directs that the Provost Marshal at that place be called upon to report whether they can be spared, without detriment to the service.
I request that you will cause the desired information to be furnished without delay.
A. C. Myers, Q. M. Genl
