Sir, |
I have your letter of May 30th ulto.
expressing regrets that your Treasurer did not succeed in having a
settlement at Montgomery for the transportation of Troops over your
road. In reply I must say to you that I regret the circumstances
equally with yourself, but it was unavoidable. Mr. McClung arrived at
Montgomery just as the Government of the C. S. was on the eve of being
transferred to this city. The Treasury Department had terminated its
duties at Montgomery, and it was not possible to obtain at the time
any funds. You will therefore please present your account at
Lynchburg, in order that the certificates may be verified for payment
here, and I will use every effort to settle with you at the earliest
moment. |
