Raleigh, N. C. |
|
Sir, |
Captain Hottel A. C. S. writes on the 8th
instant to the Commissary General as follows: |
"On Friday the 5th instant, I reached
Raleigh, and found that about 100,000 lbs of bacon {over
6 car loads} en route to Major Claiborne had been stopped at
Raleigh by order of the Officers of the Quarter Master's Department at
that place. |
"The Bacon had been there about a
week, during that week Captain Hawkins, Assistant Quarter Master, (who
is also the President of the R. {Raleigh}
and Gaston Rail Road) was allowed to take an Engine, and 10 cars, from
Raleigh to Wilmington for the purpose of bringing up Salt not
belonging to the Government. This caused a detention of not less than
eight days, of that amount of rolling stock which might and should
have been employed in forwarding supplies on to Virginia." |
The Commissary General submitted the above
to the War Department and the Secretary of War has directed that
inquiry be made into the matter. I desire therefore that you make the
necessary inquiry, and report without delay the facts of the cast to
this office. |
