Sir, |
Your letter of May 17th. instant to Hon.
L. P. Walker, Sec. of War, enclosing accounts for transportation of
Troops from Georgia and parts of South Carolina, over your road, has
been referred by the Secretary to this office. In reply I have to
inform you that it will be necessary for you to fill the certificates
upon which the accounts are based. It is proper that I should observe
that the charge for transportation of servants cannot be admitted, the
law does not authorize servants; nor can the charge for transportation
of officers horses be admitted. |
The authority under which the Troops moved
must be stated, and that they were in the service of the Confederate
States. |
After hearing from you in reply to this
letter, I will advise you of the direction given to your accounts for
settlement. |
If the above force cannot be had for hire, you are
hereby authorized to press it into the force. |
