Sir,
I have received the following telegram from Lieutenant General J. C. Pemberton.
The Southern {(of Mississippi)} Rail Road requires iron and chairs for ten miles of track, and one hundred and fifty kegs of spikes to make it safe and efficient. General Johnson informs me you are the proper person to whom to make such application. This army cant be supplied unless this Road is put in proper order. Designate the road from which to take the iron and chairs, and how the spikes can be obtained.
   Reply to Lieutenant General Pemberton.
