Quartermaster General's Department
Richmond, March 19th 1863

Cap. A. M. Allen

Columbus, Geo.

Sir,
The large quantity of Corn accumulated at Albany and other points on the S. W. {South Western} Rail Road should be moved as soon as it possibly can be done, so as to relieve these depots from such a pressure and avoid so far as may be practicable the risk of loss from heating and souring. I have instructed Mr. Wooldridge the agent of the Quarter Master's Department at Albany to ship it as fast as possible, to such points as you may designate. I have also written to Major Johnson Quarter Master at Eufaula. I hope you will give such directions both in regard to these shipments and the delivery of new purchases as will obviate the risk of loss.
What measures should be adopted your own judgment must determine, but I suggest that the storage should be divided, if possible, until the supplies are reduced by consumption.
The President of the Georgia Central {Central (of Georgia)} Rail Road has been requested to transfer a portion of the rolling stock of that road to the S. W. Rail Road.
A. C. Myers, Q. M. Genl.
