Major,
I regret that it was not in my power to visit you, in accordance with my promise on Monday last. In the first place, I have been for several days quite indisposed and moreover I have been busily engaged in preparing transportation for a large number of troops from Weldon & Petersburg to this place, Wilmington & some points further South, as the movements of the enemy may require. I have, in accordance with military orders, endeavored to do this without creating any excitement or curiosity & without interrupting the transportation of the Govt corn &c but for a day or two ??? I was compelled to remain here. I will endeavor to send all the trains back loaded of the troops and transported & if not, in a short time, I will order the trains to return for corn. I may not be able now to leave here for eight or ten days, however I am exceedingly anxious to see you about many matters & will do so soon as I can.
Very Respectfully
Your obt Servt
George Whitfield
