Quartermaster General's Department
Richmond, January 10th, 1862

Major H. L. Ranney {President, New Orleans, Jackson, & Great Northern RR}
New Orleans, La.

Sir,
   Mr. Wallace, President of the East Tennessee & Georgia Rail Road, writes to me that the Engines of that route are fast wearing out, and that in a short time he will be unable to meet the demands of the services unless he can procure assistance from some other point. He suggests that you can aid him and asks that I will urge you to it. Mr. Wallace wants two good Engines and is willing to pay a full price for them; and if you can; by any means, put him in the way of obtaining them, I trust you will do so, as it is all important to this Department and the country that the motive power of the various roads should be so distributed as to render all routs efficient. Please communicate with Mr. Wallace, as well as this office, on the subject.
A. C. Myers, Q. M. General
