Sir,
I suppose Maj Page refers to the engines & machinery for working the Gold mines near Tolusville in Louisa & Spotsylvania Cos. {These are probably industrial engines, not locomotives.} I have not seen them but believe that they were of the best description, and one of them of a heavy class. They have been much injured I am told -- portions of the finished work have been carried away by soldiers & used in the construction of chimneys.
We transported an engine to Nelson Co. from Tolusville a few weeks since, and there is or was another at T. for the Govt. waiting transportation to Richmond. I presume there are yet others, but full particulars can be learned from Mr. R. B. Davis of Tolusville.
Vry Respectfully
Your ovt Servt
H. D. Whitfield
