| Respectfully retd to QM Genl. This engine
was engaged to the W&M RR but before it was delivered the necessities of
stock for the Piedmont RRd were discovered and the Sec of War instructed
me verbally to bestow all that was suitable for it. I wrote to Mr
Fremont immediately my propontories (?). I find on examination of my
letters that my withdrawal was dated Augt 29th while his acceptance of
my offer is dated 31st Augt. The engine was never in his possession tho
under other circumstances he should have had it. He needs it I know but
it is now in possession of the Piedmont Co |
