Agt Forage Dist.
Danville Oct. 6, 1864

Major C. S. Carrington Q. M.
Richmond

Major,
Having been informed by you that I will be immediately ordered to receive and distribute all the Forage hereafter arriving at Danville Va. from the South and South West, I would respectfully suggest that I will be necessary for me to have the assistance of a Bonded agent of the Quarter Master's Department. And I respectfully nominate Littleton T. Waller, of James City County Va as a responsible person to be appointed such Bonded agent. I have known him well for many years; he is a gentleman of the highest character, intellectual and moral; aged (57) fifty seven years, consequently exempt from military duty; a refugee from home and property, and for the present dependent upon his own personal devices for the support of his family; was formerly for a number of years a Purser in the U. S. Navy, which office he voluntarily resigned before the breaking out of the present war; of accurate business habits and acquainted with Quarter Masters accounts, having been employed by me (with the Express sanction of the Quarter Master General) for the last fifteen months as my principal agent in supplying forage & other Q. M. Stores to the Piedmont R. R. while in process of construction. His employment in that connection has just ceased in consequence of the completion of the R. R.
I trust that this nomination will be approved by you, as you are also personally well acquainted with Mr Wallace; and will be sanctioned by the Q. M. General and the Hon. Secretary of War.
Very respectfully &c
H. Robertson
Capt & A. Q. M.
