Corinth Miss May 2d 61

Hon. L. P. Walker
Sec. War. Montgomery Ala.

Sir,
Accompanying this please find introductory letters from Hon F M Rogers, Judge Sale, Houston & B B Barker Esq all of Aberdeen Miss.
I wish to obtain a position in the Engineer Dept of the Confederacy & upon active service.
I now have charge of the ways & construction of 81 miles of the N.O.J. & G.N. R. Rd. {New Orleans, Jackson & Great Northern RR}, with headquarters at Aberdeen. ??? desiring to render some service during the present trouble. I hereby most respectfully tender the aid of myself & two assistants in the Topographical Eng Dept, feeling competent that I can render more efficient service in that branch of the Army than in any other manner.
I have been constantly employed for the last 13 years on various R Roads in the States, & also served under Maj. J. G. Barnard U. S. Engineers on the surveys of the Isthmus of Teholntepec Mexico in 1851, & in getting up the maps, plans & estimates at Washington.
I came up here with my assistants, with the Troops from Monroe C. thinking possibly that I could render them some immediate aid. I have a No of letters concerning capacity from Eng of note, & feel confident of rendering satisfaction should you be disposed to place me in the service. I visit N. Orleans tomorrow on business with our Presdt Maj. F. J. ranney, & will return to Aberdeen & continue my duties there until you may find leisure to write me.
I am sir,
Very Respectfully
I am Sir
Wm. Miller
