General,
   It is desirable that a company be raised to guard the Bridges on the A & N. C. Rail Road {Atlantic & North Carolina RR}, and thus relieve the troops now engaged in that service. Please give notice to that effect that such a company, if raised very soon, would be accepted. Please arrange with Mr. Whitford, President of the Road, about his building suitable huts for the accommodation of the guards now on duty at the larger Bridges. It seems to me that for the present the smaller Bridges would be sufficiently protected by the ordinary Watchman. If you agree with me in this, notify the Superintendent of the time when such guards are to be withdrawn, in order that he may replace them by other Watchmen.
