Head Quarters 1st Brigade 2d Division Army of the West
Camp Terry near Corinth Miss
April 27th 1862

Brig Genl Jos L Hogg

Sir,
At your request as to the order made by your self to the Conductors of the trains (three in no.) transporting the major portion of your Brigade to this camp from Memphis, I state that on the second day of the trip said trains arrived at Mile Station 83 {Chewalla, only 9 miles from Corinth} at or neat six o'clock A. M. and remained there running back & forth until near 4 o'clock P. M. when you issued the above order. It was believed at the time that the delay in proceeding was entirely unnecessary to say the least of it, and I called to know the cause of it from the Conductor. While there a person whom I did not know, came back to the second train & said the mail train had arrived & wanted the trains having the portion of the Brigade spoken of to back and let it pass to which I refused to consent & directed the train to go forward to Corinth as the troops were becoming restive & suspicious that the delay was for a wrong cause, or rather that the Conductors were not actuated by proper motives (in which I fully concurred) in making it. Furthermore the Regemt which commanded (Col. Greer's) had, had nothing to east since the preceding morning at daylight, the baggage car containing their rations having been by the agent at Memphis removed from the train unknown to me or said Regt.
