Dear Sir,
We are greatly in need of a small quantity of hose say some sixty-five feet and have used every exertion to procure it here but have been unable to get a foot & cannot find any except a lot in charge of Col Wm T Hurstin, taken I think from the Harriet Lane. I applied to Col Austin for that ??? are actually in need of and he informs me that he can only let us have it under orders from Genl Magruder.
Our necessities are urgent & as we have exhausted every effort to procure it elsewhere or even suitable material out of which to make what we need, we must ask the Department through you for an order for enough to ensure our immediate pressing wants. We need the hose today to carry water from our tank to our terminus & to connect the Tenders & Engines & do not see how we can manage without it.
I regret exceedingly that we are compelled to trouble the Department, but as stated we are unable to do better. We will pay for the hose & continue to use our best efforts to keep our Road in running order, that we may at any and all times be ready to respond to the call of the Gov.
Your early reply (today if possible) will greatly oblige.
Very Respy
A Sessums, Prsdt
