Dear Sir,
The Govt owes us about $200000 00/00 for transportation for Sept, Oct & Nov and we shall shortly be out of funds. We understand that Roads are required to send their accounts to Richmond to be audited and the money to be requested there.
We regret that such an order should have been found necessary, and have been discouraged from complying with it, hearing that owing to the difficulties surrounding Richmond in some cases it had been found impossible to audit the accounts and difficulties were experienced in being unable to refer to the office papers of the Road.
The ??? is now ??? by the possibility of the enemy shortly threatening the route between Augusta and Richmond.
As Roads west of us are cut and the difficulty of communication with Richmond increases it is to the interest of all concerned that Roads should not be embarrassed by anything which can be obviated. I would respectfully ask consideration to the propriety of returning to the old plan of having an auditor for, and the Roads to be paid at some accessible point, than Richmond.
Please excuse the digression from the object of this communication which is, to ask for advise as to my best course to proceed in collecting funds which will be necessary to carry on our business. This will be a matter of importance not only to this Road, but also to the Govt in rebuilding our Road to Atlanta.
Yours Respy
