Brig. Gen. Slaughter
Chief of Staff

General,
   I desire to call the attention of the Maj. Gen. Comdg to the condition of the Rail Road bridge. The plank laid down on the track for the passage of wheels horsemen and footmen is in such a condition as to render it unsafe for the two former to pass over. The planks are laid longitudinally, parallel to the rails & have shrunk so much that the wheels of vehicles can pass between them. There are many holes in the bridge. I do not consider the way a safe one for a single vehicle much less for many. I have not the means or men to make the necessary repairs. And would respectfully urge upon the General the importance of having this work attended to at once.

Very Respectfully

Brig. Gen. Comdg.
{Since Gen. Hawes was at Galveston, this must be the Galveston, Houston & Henderson RR bridge from Virginia Point to Galveston Island}
