   Endorsement on letter from Lewis E. Harvie Presdt R. & D. R. R. Co. {President, Richmond & Danville RR} dated 8th June 64, asking to have authority from Hon Sec'y of War to impress negroes & mules for defensive works at Mattoax bridge.
referred to Hon Sec'y of War & endorsed as follows:
   "Previous to the commencement of harvest some laborers might be commanded, but the mules are indispensable to work the corn. After harvest begins mules might be impressed for a week or ten days.

   Engr Bureau 9th June 1864. Resp'y forwarded to Mr. C. C. de Nendendorf asst Engr in chg. at Mattoax bridge defences, calling attention to the endorsement of the Hon Sec'y of War. Mr Harvie should be consulted as to the mode of carrying into effect the Secretary's views.
