Engineer Bureau
June 24, 1864

Col. C. F. M. Garnett
Commissioner &c

Colonel,
I shall be absent in Albemarle for two or three days & write in consequence to earnestly request you to be in Richmond if your health will possibly permit during my absence.
The question of the repair of the Danville R. R. may come up before the Bureau & a supply of iron be called for. Capt. J. W. Smith in my absence will attend to all the business of the Bureau, but should it become necessary to impress iron from the farther end of the Y. R. R. R. {Richmond & York River RR} or elsewhere, I should like him to have the benefit of your advice & assistance.
Very resp'y
A. L. Rives
Col. &c
