Richmond Oct. 30th 1862

Col. W. H. Stevens
Chief of Construction, Depart. of N. Va.

Colonel,
Lieut. Summerfield Smith reports to us that the pile driver at Wilton Bridge is no longer in use. Col. Gilmer requests me to inform you of the fact, suggesting at the same time that it might be will to commence your hire of pile obstructions. I have secured a good any piles some of which are at Rocketts while others are still at the {Richmond &} Danville R. Rd. about 6 miles above town. By notifying the Rail Road Co. and sending up hands enough to load the piles rapidly they could be all soon brought down without any difficulty.
Very Respectfully Your Obdt. Svt.
A. L. Rives
Asst. to Chief Engineer
