Colonel,
I am in receipt of a letter from Mr. A. McLean Auditor of the Orange & Alexandria RR Co. representing the urgent need of a supply of shovels now felt by that road. He adds that there is a large lot of shovels stored at Lynchburg in charge of Lt Mason and asks, inasmuch as the chief work to be done on his road is in the vicinity of that city, that he be authorized to receive the shovels at that point. Please inform the Bureau whether the supply at Lynchburg is sufficient to enable Lt Mason to turn over five or six dozen shovels to Mr. McLean for which he should pay $500 apiece.
Yours Very Respy
A. L. Rives
Lt Col & Actg Chf of Bureau
