General,
The tunnel & trestle work on the Va & Tenn RR a short distance east of the Montgomery White Sulphur Springs may be approached by the Enemy by several routes without encountering any of our troops.
They may come by the Salt pound Mountain by the Sweet Springs or by the Warm Springs. The blowing up of the tunnel or burning of the trestle work would greatly inconvenience us.
I wish you to examine the locality and place a sufficient guard there to protect those works. The guard may be sent up by RR & relieved once a week. I have directed Capt Robinson of the Engineers to examine the locality and construct one or two blockhouses in such positions as to enable a small guard to defend those works against any force the Enemy would be likely to send on such a raid.
Very Respectfully
Yr obt set
Saml Jones
