| Your communication of the 23d
ult. addressed to Br. Genl. Slaughter, Chf of Staff, has been referred
to Maj. Genl. Magruder, which he has returned to this office, endorsed
as follows: |
| "The steamers in question have
been placed under the control of the Qr Mrs at Galveston, but as they
are liable to be called off by my order, for other purposes, still more
important than the supply of fuel to the citizens of Galveston, who have
returned contrary to my wishes, and a large majority of whom are wealthy
and perfectly able to buy their own fuel and transport it at their own
expense by the Rl. Rd. {Galveston, Houston &
Henderson RR} which is used by the Govt only 3 days in the week;
when it can be used 6 days in the week; if the citizens of Galveston and
her authorities will pay the money which the Road will charge. |
