Captain,
An evil exists in reference to furnishing transportation to soldiers by which they are compelled to lose much time upon the roads. Under the new schedule adopted by the Rail Roads, time will not be afforded the soldiers to procure transportation at Lake City or any other point of stoppage. I would recommend as a remedy, that transportation through to any desired point be issued by an officer at this camp, or at Baldwin, so that a soldier, procuring a furlough, can, at once, get his transportation before starting, and without wasting his limited time in stoppages upon the Road. There are, I am informed, at Lake City, tickets to all points, as far as Richmond Virginia which can be transferred to, and used at this point.
Respectfully submitted,
Jno. F. Lays
