General,
I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt today of your communication of the 6th inst, addressed to Maj. Genl. Maury, recently in command of this Dept., during my temporary absence in Georgia. Maj. Geo. W. Whitfield, a most active and energetic officer, and peculiarly fitted for the work, has been placed in charge of the repairs required on the railroad to Decatur, and will receive from me every assistance in the way of labor and material I can render to enable him to complete it with the least possible delay. The road as far as Tuscumbia {Memphis & Charleston RR} will be in running order by the 1st of January. Between Tuscumbia and Courtland it was badly damaged by our own forces last Spring and will require considerable time to repair. From Courtland on to Decatur few repairs are needed.
Repeating the assurance that I shall push on this important work as rapidly as the means at my disposal will allow
I am, General
Very respectfully
Your obt. Servant
R. Taylor
Lt. Genl.
