Colonel,
The Lt. Genl. Comdg directs me to inform you that for the present, and until instructions can be had from the Honorable Secy of War, no iron will be taken up from the Newbern {North Western RR of Alabama} or Marion {Cahaba, Marion & Greensboro RR} branches to complete the Railroad from Blue Mountain to Jacksonville {Alabama & Tennessee River RR}. In the meantime any work that can be done towards making the road bed ready for the iron, must be done by the R. R. Company. The Government cannot, in the present emergency, spare any hands for the purposes.
The Lt. General Commanding further directs me to inquire of you what decision was arrived at in the matter of taking up iron for the proposed extension above referred to. Also whether the Ala. & Miss. R. Railroad Company cannot furnish the iron for the four miles needed at Demopolis, without disturbing the Newbern branch. He is under the impression the Company might accomplish this by having flat iron rolled.
