His Excellency
Gov Charles Clark
Macon, Miss.

Governor,
I have just received a communication from Genl. Beauregard, of date 22d inst. directing me to apply to you for such assistance as you may be able to furnish in protecting and garrisoning the lines of the Memphis & Charleston and Mobile & Ohio R. Roads, with the view of enabling me to render all the aid I can to Genl Hood who is moving to Middle Tennessee and will doubtless establish Tuscumbia a his base.
As it occurs to me that a general call for the militia, so soon after their recent disbanding would prove a heavy burden o the State, I have the honor to request that the volunteers you are organizing may be turned over, for the purpose above indicated, to Major Genl Gardner as rapidly as they are formed into battalions or companies.
Very respectfully
Your obt Servt
R. Taylor
Lieut. Gnl
