Major, |
I have just returned from
Charlotte, can do nothing there. Major Echols says he is compelled to
get off his accumulations there, and controlling to a great extent as he
seems to do, the transportation of the {North
Carolina} Road, it is impossible to get the cars returning from
Raleigh, to stop at any of the way stations. Capt Goodman the AQM here
has done for me every thing in his power & I have had all the influence
of Major Peirce, the Chief Qr Master for the state who telegraphs to me
"I have done everything I could do -- telegraphed to Col Sims Richmond."
Col Sims is coming this way. I shall endeavor to see him. |
The Superintendent of the Road
has as I have previously notified you given me two trains. One of eight
cars was laden last night at Concord with 460 bls flour
{6 car loads} 12 boxes bacon & 8 boxes
potatoes the other will be here this morning & will be appropriated to
flour & bacon. I am endeavoring to get a train from the Wilmington{,
Charlotte} & Rutherford Road & telegraphed to Mr Sumner
{Superintendent, North Carolina RR} for
more cars. I shall sendown to the Shops in the morning & endeavor to
secure them. Major Lowe has some 40 or 50000 lbs bacon in bulk
{2 to 3 car loads}, he is delayed for
packages. Major Myers I find a most valuable & energetic officer, but he
is very much pressed just now for the want of funds. |
Very Respectfully |
