| The letter of the President of
the Wilmington & Manchester RR and the statement of the Engineer of the
conduct of Col. Lightfoot 6th Alabama Regiment at Sumter S. C. have been
referred to General Lee by the War Dept. The General directs me to
request that you will inform him, if in your power, where Col. Winder
mentioned as having been on the train, is to be found and also if
practicable get from Colonel Winder the names of any other officers who
were present at the time of the occurrence. He desires to bring the
affair to an investigation as soon as possible. |
