My Dear Johny

*****We started an expedition last week under Thos. R. Sharp who has lately been engaged removing machinery from Martinsburg, and Col Turner Ashby to blow up a part of one of the feeder dams across the Potomac thereby cutting off that supply of provisions & necessaries from the cities of Georgetown & Washington. The heavy storms rain & high water prevented them from accomplishing their object and it has been deferred until the water falls again in the Potomac. *****
Your affectionate father
