Col. E. Fontaine  {President, Virginia Central RR}

Dear Sir,
   My course of lectures on Anatomy is about to be arrested by the impossibility of procuring transportation from Richmond for the subject which is necessary to illustrate them. I am informed that throughout the present month, the freight trains will be exclusively occupied in carrying government supplies. Could you not render this School the essential service of permitting a couple of barrels to be brought up for our use?
   Your young friend Pickens received a fall 4 days ago which I fear has seriously injured his broken thigh. It had nited, although with shortening & deformity & he was moving about primarily on crutches.
   A speedy answer will much oblige.
Yours very truly
J. S. Davis
