   The Virginia Railroad Company hereby promise and oblige themselves to pay to John M. Robinson of                         or his assigns six months after the ratification of a treaty of peace between the Confederate States of America and the United States of America or on the Thirty first day of December 1865 (Eighteen Hundred and Sixty five) whichever date shall first occur One Hundred and Eighty one pounds, Ten shillings and Four pence sterling money of Great Britain with interest thereon computed from the date of this obligation until payment of the principal at the rate of eight percentum per annum the said interest to be paid in London semiannually when due also in English Sterling Money or at the option of the said John M. Robinson or his assigns made known to the said Railroad Company not less than Sixty days after the ratification of the said treaty of peace nor less than Sixty days before the thirty first day of December Eighteen hundred abnd sixty five in Cotton of the quality of Middling Upland to be computed and taken at the value of Five pence Sterling per pound and to be delivered to the order of the said John M. Robinson or his assigns free of all taxes and charges in the Port of Wilmington or Norfolk as the said John M. Robinson or his assigns shall elect and advise the said Railroad Company at the time of exercising his option to be paid in Cotton
