   Your road is so well conditioned transports freight faster than others can take it away. By sending your cars all the way through and hiring others to intermediate roads this disagreeable delay can be avoided. Va & Tenn RR are in need though hope be relieved soon.

{On reverse side} The Hon. W. Ashe, of N. C., President of the Wilmington & Weldon {RR} is the gentleman I mentioned to you in connexion with my conversation with Mr. Davis. He is charged with arranging the transportation for the Quartermaster Department throughout the Confederacy.

Though the document has no month or year on it, it is clearly from 1861. I have chosen August as a likely month for it to have been sent, but it could have been a month earlier or later.
