| My dear Sir, |
| Pursuant to your request & my promise I
proceed to state to you in writing what I said to you verbally several
times heretofore -- to wit: That on the occasion of my visit with
others at Fernandina in April 1862, when we went under the Military
Sanction & Authority of Col. W. G. M. Davis then in command here, for
the purpose of endeavoring to recover run away negroes; while on board
the U. S. Armed Ship Pawnee, Capt. Percival Drayton the commander,
showed me |
|
one or more of the engraved Florida Rail Road Bonds which had been
found there by the Federal forces when they took possession of the
place in February or March previously. I understood that they had
found a considerable number of them & the one or two that I saw were
shown me as samples. I am not very positive about it, but my
impression is that they were in blank. |
|
I am very truly &c |
