| Ascertain what has been done for RR's in the several Southern
States. |
| Virga. In 1859. The state had aided the Railroads by
cash, subscriptions, loans, & guarantees &c to the amt of
R17,213,860.89. Of which $14,779.324.74 was in subscriptions paid in for
capital stock agst $9,130,445.84 paid in up to same time by others than
the State. (note much of this last was stock paid out to contractors).
At this time there were 1438 miles in operation, out 287 miles of it was
part of the Balt & Ohio RR in which the state took no part, the actual
amt of miles therefore of state road improvements for which this aid was
contributed was 1157 miles (or $15000 pr mile). |
