Annual Report of the Atlanta & West
Point RR |
as of July 1, 1865, |
President's Report |
|
Atlanta & West Point Railroad Co |
Atlanta, Ga., July 25th, 1865 |
|
To the Stockholders of the Atlanta
& West Point Railroad Company |
|
Since July, 1863, the Stockholders have not before met in
annual convention. The causes of this interruption, have been
mentioned by the Superintendent, and are too well known to require
special notice. As portions of the Road and its business have often
been beyond the control of its managers, the usual reports by the
officers and board cannot be made with fullness and accuracy. But an
outline of management and present condition, may be seen by the Report
of the Superintendent and the Statements of the Treasurer, annexed to
this report. The past history of the Company has been one of
unprecedented prosperity; with a full capital, large profits, a good
reserved fund, and no debt beyond immediate means, its dividends have
been regular and liberal, and there seemed scarcely a limit, to the
rapidly advancing value of the stock. Like most other Southern
interests, however, and especially railroad interests, its prosperity
has been rudely checked by the violence of war, and for the first time
in the history of the Company, an unfavorable balance was exhibited by
the profit and loss account, on the first of July, instant. *****
