Col. J. F. Gilmer
Chief of Engineer Bureau
Richmond Va.

Colonel,
Your letter of the 18th inst. requesting me to proceed with the salt works has been recd and will be acted upon as promptly as possible.
Your suggestions will be carried out as the case will admit. I have no other guide in the plan of works than Prof. Thomassy's explanations, which were rather crude and hasty.
In the event that the Ala. & Ten. River R. R. Co. accept the loan under the conditions named in your dispatch, shall I offer similar terms (a proportionate amount) to the Geo. & Ala. R. R. Co. for grading, masonry, bridging &c. on that portion of the line within this State?
Very Respectfully
L. P. Grant
Capt. Engrs. P. A. C. S.
