| Your letter of the 15th inst. to Col. J.
W. Robertson, Comdt. of this Post, has been referred to me. Major ?. ?.
Clarke, Chief Engineer of that portion of this State which is within the
Department commanded by Gen. Beauregard, and stationed at Savannah, has
assigned the negroes from Troup and Meriwether Counties to the Defenses
around Columbus under my charge. He claims to control the negroes liable
to impressment in all the Counties within his Military District. |
| As some objection is made by the planters
of Troup Co. to sending their negroes to this point on account of having
served already at Atlanta, will you please inform me when it was that
their term expired. |
