| The Property return shows a large
expenditure of tools, say axes, shovels & picks. The axes and shovels
have proved very defective. This will not however account for the whole
expenditure. We have felt the want of police. With the utmost vigilance
we have been unable to prevent thefts, by the lawless gangs that infest
our locality. |
| The payments for negro hire will be
procrastinated far beyond the expiration of service. The owners are
scattered over the State, and many are difficult to reach. |
| I shall require $30,000 during this month. |
| Your favor of the 18th ult. with duplicate
receipts for $150 has been received. Your suggestions in relation to
Maxwell and Nocqust will be acted upon. |
